Things to do in Dubrovnik, the City by the Sea

Dubrovnik is the southernmost city in Croatia, and is a storied place filled with history. It is a walled city, a seaport, which dates back to the 13th century. It is one of the most visited destinations in Croatia, and indeed one of the most visited places on the Adriatic coast. Until 1909, the city was called Ragusa. This is a great example of a true medieval city.

Visitors to Dubrovnik will be happy to know that there is plenty to see and do in this historic city, from checking out the famous city walls to lounging on the beach.

City Walls

No one can help but be impressed at the sight of the Dubrovnik City Walls that surround the most ancient part of the city, that which was built in the 13th century. Tourists will want to make sure they see the large Minceta Tower and the Bokar Tower, which were designed to help guard the wall and the port.

Old City

The Old City, the portion of Dubrovnik that dates back to medieval times, is beautiful. It is a place where visitors can truly feel transported to another time and place. The architecture is incredible and something that no visitor should miss. Be sure to check out the Stradun, the main road in the Old City. You can also find several great restaurants here, as you are sure to work up an appetite while exploring the Dubrovnik city.

Beaches

One of the most popular beaches in the area is Sveti Jakov, which has a great view of the Old City. This is a place for the locals and tourists congregate and relax in the cool waters. Another popular beach is on the Island of Lopud, which is quite easy to reach. You will also find a small restaurant that is quite popular.

Rector’s Palace

This was where the government of the city ruled (back when it was known as Ragusa). It is a gorgeous building with a lot of historical significance, and when you buy a ticket for a self-guided tour, you also get admission to the city museum. In the museum you can see some interesting artifacts from Dubrovnik’s past.

The great walled city of Dubrovnik has so much to offer visitors in terms of relaxation and culture that visitors will never find themselves at a loss for things to do. Simply walking around the city and taking in all of the incredible buildings will occupy most tourists for days!
