Being a growing tourism market, increasingly popular with international travellers and holidaymakers, Croatia and in particular Dubrovnik are often visited by international celebrities. In 2010 Croatia has achieved a record year, topping nearly 11 million visitors in 2010. Dubrovnik was the most visited city by the large cruise ships, with over 800 cruise ships passing through. Split is the second most visited city by cruises, with over 220 cruise ship visits in 2010. In November and December 2010 Dubrovnik experienced growing number of visitors in particularly coming from Turkey. Their numbers have gone up by 160% this year. Over 2 million tourists visited Croatia's National Parks in 2010, many of those from Japan.
These visitor numbers continue to rise every year. By 2020 it's expected that Croatia will be hosting around 16 million visitors annually. However, more focus is now being placed on attracting visitors who will stay longer and utilize more of available options. The idea is to slow down the number of visitors, while improving quality of available services and higher value accommodation.
